Why This Is Probably Wrong
The strongest argument against the mesh hypothesis is that the brain may be showing us itself.
The mesh may not be real. That has to be said clearly. It may not be a hidden structure of spacetime. It may not be the fabric of reality. It may not be anything outside the nervous system at all.
The most likely explanation may also be the simplest:
The brain is generating it.
Not because the experience is meaningless. Not because it is “just hallucination” in the lazy sense.
But because the brain is an organ that builds reality from signals.
And when that organ is altered, the reality it builds can begin to reveal its own machinery.
That may be what the mesh is. Not the structure of the universe. The structure of perception. This is the first and strongest counterargument.
Under psychedelics, the brain does not simply show random nonsense. It often produces patterns. Repeating forms. Symmetry. Spirals. Grids. Lattices. Tunnels. Webs. Fractals. Eyes. Faces. Impossible architecture.
Anyone who has spent time with psychedelic reports will recognize this.
The visual world often becomes geometric.
Not always.
Not for everyone.
But often enough that it cannot be ignored.
This matters because geometry is not automatically a sign that something external has been revealed. Geometry may be what the visual system naturally produces when normal filtering changes.
The brain is already a pattern-making engine. It does not passively receive the world like a camera. It constructs. It predicts. It edits. It fills gaps. It organizes chaos into something usable.
Ordinary perception is not raw reality entering the head untouched. It is an active model — a controlled construction that allows us to survive, move, recognize, respond and function.
In that sense, every normal day is already a kind of hallucination.
A useful one.
A stable one.
A shared one.
But still a construction.
So when a psychedelic state loosens the usual rules, the construction process may become visible.
Instead of only seeing the finished world, perhaps we begin to see the scaffolding.
Not spacetime scaffolding. Perceptual scaffolding. The mesh may be the interface showing its seams. That explanation has power.
It does not require unknown physics.
It does not require hidden dimensions.
It does not require the universe to be built from tiny adhesive boxes.
It only requires that the brain, under altered conditions, generates organized visual structures.
That is already enough.
And if that is true, then the mesh hypothesis is probably wrong as a description of external reality.
At least in its strongest form. The second counterargument is pattern recognition. Humans are extremely good at finding patterns. Sometimes too good.
We see faces in clouds. Meaning in coincidences. Messages in noise. Structure in randomness.
This ability is one of our greatest strengths, but it is also one of our greatest traps.
A mind that sees patterns can build art, language, mathematics, myth and science.
The same mind can also build false certainty.
A psychedelic experience can intensify this tendency dramatically. Everything feels connected. Every symbol feels important. Every image feels intentional. The experience may come with a built-in sense of significance.
That is dangerous.
Because the feeling of meaning can arrive before the meaning has earned itself.
The green grid may feel like the fabric of space.
But feeling is not proof.
The mesh may feel functional.
It may feel like it holds reality together.
It may feel connected to matter.
But the brain can generate strong feelings of function, agency and significance without those feelings pointing to something external.
That is uncomfortable.
But necessary.
The third counterargument is interpretation after the fact.
This may be the most subtle one.
What I saw during the experience may not be exactly what I later described.
Memory is not a recording.
It is reconstruction.
After the ceremony, the mind begins to organize what happened. It searches for language. It reaches for metaphors. It borrows from science, philosophy, movies, prior beliefs, spiritual ideas and personal history.
A visual pattern becomes a grid.
A grid becomes a mesh.
A mesh becomes structure.
Structure becomes spacetime. Spacetime becomes hypothesis.
At each step, something may be added.
Not deliberately.
Not dishonestly.
Just naturally. The mind wants the experience to make sense.
And because the experience is so powerful, the mind may give it a larger frame than it deserves.
That is why Reality Mesh must always ask:
What was actually experienced?
And separately:
What interpretation was added later?
Those are not the same thing. The raw experience may have been: A blue-green geometric grid appeared in the visual field.
The interpretation may have been: This grid is connected to matter and may represent the structure of spacetime.
The first is a field note. The second is a hypothesis. Mixing them together is how bad thinking begins. The fourth counterargument is expectation.
Had I already been interested in hidden structures?
Yes.
Had I already thought about consciousness, simulation, physics, ancient cosmology, psychedelics and reality behind reality?
Yes.
Then it is entirely possible that my mind produced an experience shaped by those interests.
Not fake. Not meaningless.
But influenced.
The brain does not generate visions in a vacuum. It uses what is available. It uses memory, symbols, fears, hopes, ideas, images, language and expectation.
If a person spends years thinking about hidden layers of existence, then sees a hidden layer during a psychedelic experience, caution is required.
Maybe the experience revealed something.
Or maybe the mind dressed itself in the symbols it already knew I would understand.
The fifth counterargument is that “mesh” may simply be a visual archetype.
A grid is one of the simplest ways the mind can represent order.
If consciousness is pushed into a state where ordinary boundaries loosen, a grid may appear because it is a basic symbol of structure.
Not because reality is a grid. But because the brain needs a form to represent underlying order.
A grid says: Arrangement. Connection. Repetition. Framework. System.
It is an efficient visual metaphor. The mind may choose it because it works.
That would still be interesting, but it would weaken the hypothesis. The mesh would then be symbolic, not ontological. It would tell us something about how the mind represents order, not necessarily how the universe is constructed.
The sixth counterargument is scale.
Even if the brain showed something real about perception, that does not mean it showed something about galaxies, gravity or spacetime.
This is a huge leap.
Too huge, maybe.
A subjective grid in consciousness does not automatically connect to cosmology.
A visual experience in a human brain does not explain why galaxies rotate the way they do.
A psychedelic field note does not compete with physics.
Reality Mesh must never pretend otherwise.
The moment we say:
I saw a mesh, therefore I understand gravity,
the project collapses into nonsense.
The honest version is smaller.
Stronger.
More disciplined.
I saw a mesh.
It felt connected to matter and structure.
That experience made me ask new questions about space, perception and reality.
That is allowed.
That is honest.
That is enough.
The seventh counterargument is neurochemistry.
Psychedelics alter brain function.
They affect perception, attention, emotion, memory, meaning-making and the sense of self. They can make internal processes feel external. They can make symbols feel alive. They can make ordinary things appear sacred, intelligent or interconnected.
This does not make the experience worthless.
But it means the experience cannot be treated as direct access to truth.
A telescope is built to observe distant objects.
A microscope is built to observe small ones.
A psychedelic state is not built as an instrument of measurement.
It may reveal.
It may distort.
It may open.
It may confuse.
Usually, it probably does all of these at once.
That is why the interpretation must remain humble.
The mesh may be a doorway.
It may also be a mirror.
And if it is a mirror, the question changes.
Not:
What is the universe made of?
But:
Why does the mind show itself as a universe?
That question may be even more interesting.
Because if the mesh is generated by the brain, then the experience still matters. It may show how perception is organized. It may show how the mind constructs spatial reality. It may show how deeply our experience of the world depends on hidden processes we normally never notice.
The mesh hypothesis may be wrong as physics.
But useful as phenomenology.
That distinction matters.
Physics asks what the universe is.
Phenomenology asks how reality appears to consciousness.
Reality Mesh lives carefully between those two, and must never confuse them.
So where does this leave the hypothesis?
Weakened.
Which is good.
A serious idea should survive being weakened.
If it cannot, it was never serious.
The Adhesive Spacetime Mesh Hypothesis is probably wrong if it claims that a psychedelic visual experience directly reveals the literal structure of spacetime.
That version should be rejected.
Or at least held at extremely low confidence.
But a more careful version may still survive:
Under altered states, the mind sometimes represents reality as a three-dimensional mesh or grid. This may be neurological, symbolic, perceptual or something not yet understood. The experience is not evidence that spacetime is a mesh, but it may be a useful image for exploring how perception, matter, space and meaning become entangled in consciousness.
That version is still alive. Barely. But alive.
And that is exactly where it belongs. Not on a throne.
On a workbench.
Reality Mesh is not here to protect the first interpretation.
It is here to investigate what remains after the easy interpretation is attacked.
Maybe the mesh is external.
Maybe it is internal.
Maybe it is symbolic.
Maybe it is noise dressed as revelation.
Maybe it is the visual cortex under pressure.
Maybe it is perception becoming visible to itself.
Maybe it is a wrong image pointing toward a better question.
For now, I do not know.
And that is not a failure of the hypothesis.
It is the only honest place to begin.

It rejects the easiest interpretation of it.
That distinction matters.
Reality Mesh treats personal experience as real experience, not as automatic proof of external reality.
The hypothesis survives only if it remains willing to be wrong.
