The Green Grid
I did not go looking for a grid.
I did not know one would appear, and I had no expectation that space itself would look different.
Yet one thing returned again and again.
A structure.
It was not floating in front of me. It was not painted onto the walls, and it did not feel imagined as an overlay placed on top of the room.
It felt woven into the room itself.
A three-dimensional lattice. Tiny repeating cells stretching in every direction, almost invisible, yet impossible to ignore once it appeared.
The strange part was not that it existed.
The strange part was what it seemed to do.
It clung to matter. The walls seemed wrapped in it. Furniture appeared surrounded by it. My own body looked embedded within it.
Nothing appeared separate from the structure.
Everything appeared held by it.
I cannot tell you whether this was external reality. I cannot tell you whether it was my visual cortex generating geometric hallucinations. I cannot tell you whether it was my brain trying to translate something too complex into symbols.
I genuinely do not know.
That uncertainty matters, because this essay is not about proving anything. It is simply documenting an experience that returned often enough for me to stop ignoring it.
One detail stayed with me.
The structure was not random.
It felt functional. Not decorative. Not psychedelic art. Functional.
As though it existed for a reason.
Almost like architecture.
Or scaffolding.
The experience itself lasted only a short time, but the image remained for years. It became one of those fragments that refused to disappear.
Only much later did I begin asking questions.
Could there be any reason so many psychedelic experiences contain repeating geometric structures? Why grids? Why lattices? Why networks? Why does the brain seem drawn toward geometry when perception changes?
Those questions came later.
The experience came first.
That is the important part.
This article is not a theory.
It is a field note.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.

- Is “empty space” an experience of perception rather than a description of reality?
- Could psychedelic mesh experiences represent the structure of perception rather than the structure of the universe?
- Why does matter appear, in some altered states, to be embedded in or attached to space?
- Can a symbolic image create a useful intuition without being literally true?
- If the mesh is neurological, what exactly is being made visible?
- If the mesh is metaphorical, what is it a metaphor for?
- Does ordinary perception hide structure because too much information would make life impossible?
