If Space Isn’t Empty
What if emptiness is only what reality looks like before we can see its structure?
The strangest part of the mesh experience was not the grid itself.
It was what came after.
Once the image had settled, I found myself asking a question I had never seriously considered before:
What if space is not empty?
Not in the ordinary scientific sense. I know that even “empty” space contains fields, radiation, vacuum fluctuations, and whatever else physics has better language for than I do.
I mean something more personal. More direct. More experiential.
What if the feeling of emptiness is not a property of space itself, but a limitation in how we perceive it?
To ordinary perception, space appears as the distance between things. A table is here. A wall is there. My body sits between them. The air seems empty, the room seems mostly empty, and the space between objects seems like nothing.
But during the mesh experience, that assumption collapsed.
The distance between things did not feel empty.
It felt occupied. Structured. Held.
The room no longer appeared to be made of objects floating in absence. It appeared to be made of objects embedded in a deeper framework. Matter did not seem to sit inside space. Matter seemed attached to space.
Or perhaps space seemed attached to matter.
That distinction may matter later.
For now, I only want to stay with the image.
A structure extending through everything. A mesh that did not merely surround matter, but gathered around it. The more presence something had, the more the structure appeared to collect.
Not as physical glue. Not as a visible substance.
More like a relationship.
A bond between mass and the space around it.
This is where the thought becomes dangerous, because it is very easy to start pretending the experience explains something it does not.
So let me be clear:
I am not saying I saw gravity. I am not saying I saw dark matter. I am not saying I saw spacetime.
I am saying the experience gave me an image that changed the way I think about those words.
Before this, gravity was mostly an abstraction to me. I knew the simple version: mass attracts mass, objects fall, planets orbit, and stars bend the paths of things around them.
I also knew, in the popular-level way, that Einstein changed the picture. Gravity is not simply a force pulling objects through empty space. It can also be understood as the curvature of spacetime around mass and energy.
That idea had always been beautiful to me.
But still distant.
A diagram. A rubber sheet. A bowling ball.
A simplified picture used to explain something much deeper.
After the mesh experience, the image became more physical in my mind.
Not more correct.
More alive.
I began to imagine space not as a smooth background, but as a vast hidden structure capable of tension, density, and relationship. A structure that responds to matter. A structure that changes around what exists inside it.
In this image, mass does not merely occupy space.
Mass recruits structure.
It gathers mesh. It thickens the field around itself. The more mass, the more structure collects. The more structure collects, the more the surrounding reality bends.
Again: this is not a scientific claim.
It is an internal model. A speculative image. A way of thinking.
But it gave me a different intuition about gravity.
Gravity stopped feeling like an invisible hand pulling things together. It began to feel more like a consequence of attachment.
Matter and space were not separate.
They were locked together. Hooked. Bound.
Mass said to space:
Gather here.
And space answered:
Then everything passing through me must follow the shape I now have.
That is the image.
Not proof.
Image.
But images matter. They are often where thought begins. A wrong image can still open a useful question.
And this image opened one that has not left me:
If space has structure, could the feeling of “emptiness” simply be the surface-level experience of a deeper architecture?
Maybe the human brain filters that architecture out because it has no survival value. We do not need to perceive the hidden structure of spacetime to walk across a room, eat dinner, take photographs, or avoid traffic. In fact, seeing too much structure might make ordinary life impossible.
Perhaps perception simplifies reality so we can function inside it.
It removes the machinery.
It hides the scaffolding.
It lets us see objects, not the framework they are embedded in.
This is one of the central ideas behind Reality Mesh:
The world we perceive may not be false.
But it may be edited.
Not fake.
Filtered.
A usable version of something far more complex.
Under ordinary conditions, the filter does its job. It gives us tables, walls, bodies, streets, faces, screens, hands, light, and distance. It gives us a world we can move through.
But under altered states, perhaps the filter changes.
Not necessarily revealing truth, but revealing different processing. Different layers. Different translations.
And sometimes, what comes through is structure.
A grid. A lattice. A mesh.
The temptation is to say:
This is what space really is.
But that is too fast.
The better question is:
Why does the mind represent altered reality as structured space?
That question is safer. Stronger. More useful.
Because it allows multiple answers.
Maybe the mesh is entirely neurological. Maybe it is generated by the visual cortex. Maybe psychedelics disrupt normal sensory processing and cause the brain’s pattern-making systems to become visible to consciousness.
Maybe the grid is not outside me at all.
Maybe it is the architecture of perception looking back at itself.
That alone would be fascinating.
If the mesh is only the brain, it still matters, because the brain is the system through which reality appears to us. To see its structure is not meaningless.
It may not show the universe.
But it may show the interface.
And the interface is not a small thing.
Every world we have ever known has passed through it.
Still, another possibility remains.
Maybe the brain is not inventing the structure from nothing. Maybe it is translating something.
Not accurately. Not literally. Not scientifically.
But symbolically.
Maybe there is a relationship between matter and space that the ordinary senses cannot display, and under certain conditions the mind represents that relationship as a mesh.
Not because the universe is literally made of little boxes, but because “mesh” is the closest image available.
The nearest metaphor the brain can render.
A symbolic compression of something too deep for ordinary perception.
I do not know which of these is true.
That is the point.
The mesh may be external structure. It may be internal structure. It may be both. It may be neither.
But the experience forces the question:
What is emptiness?
Is it nothing?
Or is it simply what structure looks like when we are not tuned to see it?
That question becomes even stranger when thinking about scale.
A grain of dust. A stone. A body. A planet. A star. A galaxy.
If matter and space are bound together in ways we only partly understand, then perhaps the universe is not a collection of objects floating in emptiness. Perhaps it is a vast relational structure, where everything that exists modifies the field it exists within.
Again, physics already has serious language for some of this.
I do not.
I only have the image.
But the image feels like this:
Reality is not built inside empty space.
Reality is built through structured relation.
Objects are not isolated. They are held in a web of influence. Mass, motion, distance, and time are not separate ingredients. They are part of one unfolding system.
And we are inside it.
Not observing from outside. Not floating free.
Embedded.
Held.
Fastened into the same structure we are trying to understand.
That may be the deepest emotional effect of the mesh idea. It removes the illusion of separation.
Not in a soft spiritual way.
In a structural way.
If space itself is not empty, then nothing is truly alone inside it. Every object participates in the field. Every body bends and is bent. Every mass belongs to the architecture.
Even if the mesh hypothesis turns out to be completely wrong, this intuition remains valuable:
The universe is not a stage with things placed on top of it.
The stage is part of the event.
The room is not just where reality happens.
The room is part of reality happening.
And maybe “empty space” is only the name we give to the parts of the structure our senses have learned to ignore.

- If the mesh is metaphorical, what is it a metaphor for?
- Does ordinary perception hide structure because too much information would make life impossible?
